Engagement photos are one of my favorite parts of the wedding process! Not just because of the photos themselves (although I obviously love those), but because of how unique they can turn out be. I always tell my couples this: your unique engagement pictures should feel like a date night, NOT a photoshoot! Before every session, I send over a little questionnaire to get a feel for what you love doing together, where you spend your time, and what feels most like you. From there, I’ll put together a few ideas and we’ll collaborate to create something that feels natural and fun. The goal is that it doesn’t feel like you’re posing for photos. It feels like you’re just hanging out together, and I happen to be there with a camera.
If you’re wanting unique engagement pictures that truly reflect your relationship, here are a few ideas to get you started — and if you’re looking for a DFW engagement photographer, I’d love to connect!

One of the easiest ways to create unique engagement pictures is to choose locations that already mean something to you. Sarah and Jack (pictured below) started their session at Match Point Coffee in Fort Worth and ended at Docs Records, which felt so them from the very beginning. Nothing felt forced, and they were completely comfortable the entire time.
Margaret and William chose the bar where they had their first date, The Wild Detectives, and then we headed to the park across the street from their home. It felt familiar in the best way, which made everything feel easy and relaxed. When your location already matters to you, your photos will too. It takes the pressure off and lets you just be yourselves!

Think less about the poses and more about what you’d actually do together. Jamie and Kinley planned their session around their first date on the Dallas trolley, stopped at their favorite taco spot, and just wandered around the city for a bit. It didn’t feel like a photoshoot. It felt like a night out! That’s usually when the best moments happen — when you’re laughing, moving around, and not thinking about the camera at all.

Some of the most unique engagement pictures come from including the things that are already part of your life. That might be your dog, your favorite drink, a shared hobby, or even just a little routine you love doing together. Pets are always a yes from me! They instantly bring personality into your session and make everything feel more like real life.

Outfits make a bigger difference than people think, but not in a stressful way. The goal isn’t to wear something trendy or overly styled. It’s to wear something that feels like you on your best day. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, pulling something up, or feeling out of place, it’s going to show. But when you feel comfortable, everything else comes more naturally. You move easier, you relax faster, and the photos reflect that! I always recommend choosing outfits you’d realistically wear on a date night together. Something you feel confident in, something you can move in, and something that fits the overall vibe of your location.

If you want your photos to feel a little more creative, choosing a unique location can make such a difference — especially when it still reflects your personality.
Coffee shops are always a favorite. They’re cozy, interactive, and give you something to do with your hands, which helps everything feel more natural. You’re sitting close, sipping something, and it naturally feels more like a date than a photoshoot.
Record stores have such a fun energy to them! You’re flipping through albums, moving around, laughing together, and not overthinking what to do. It keeps everything feeling candid.
Bookstores are another one I’ll always recommend. They create such a calm, intimate setting. Sitting on the floor together, flipping through pages, or just wandering the aisles gives your session a slower, more personal feel!
Your favorite bar or restaurant is also such a good option, especially if it’s tied to your story. Whether it’s where you had your first date or just somewhere you love going together, it already feels familiar, and that comfort shows up in your photos in the best way.
Using your wedding venue can also be a really fun way to create unique engagement pictures. Kaitlyn and Jack chose to have their session at Weston Gardens, and it gave them the chance to experience the space in a slower, more relaxed way. There’s no timeline, no pressure, no guests waiting — just the two of you getting comfortable in a place that will soon hold so many memories!
If you want something that feels a little more private, turning your session into a staycation is always such a good idea. Anita and Max booked an Airbnb in Austin and made a whole experience out of it. We included coffee, wine, slow morning moments, and their pup, which made everything feel so personal and relaxed. Having your own space makes such a difference. You can fully settle in, take your time, and just enjoy being together.
The key with all of these is choosing a place you’d actually go together. That’s what keeps it from feeling staged and helps everything feel relaxed from the start!
