A Documentary Style Dallas Arboretum Wedding on Film

Some weddings just feel easy in the best way. The kind of day where nothing feels rushed, everyone is relaxed, and the couple is truly able to soak everything in. Carmen and Zach’s Dallas Arboretum wedding was exactly that! I had the opportunity to second shoot this wedding alongside the incredibly talented lead photographer, Emily Liz, and I shot the entire day exclusively on film. Shooting a wedding on 35mm and 120mm film creates a completely different rhythm than digital photography. Film forces you to slow down, observe moments more intentionally, and truly document what is unfolding rather than constantly directing it.

And honestly? This wedding was the perfect example of why film photography and documentary-style weddings pair so beautifully together. Between the emotional first looks, a private cake cutting, and a reception full of personal touches (including an ice cream bar and tables named after their favorite bands), the entire celebration felt relaxed, meaningful, and incredibly joyful.

A Beautiful Dallas Arboretum Wedding Venue

The Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden is easily one of the most stunning garden wedding venues in Dallas. For Carmen and Zach’s wedding day, the venue felt vibrant and alive. Garden venues like this are especially perfect for film photography. Film loves natural light and organic color palettes, and the Arboretum offers both in abundance. The soft greens, florals, and golden evening light translated beautifully on film!

Why Film Photography is Perfect for a Wedding Day

One of the things I loved most about Carmen and Zach’s wedding was how well it aligned with the pace of film photography. Film is much more intentional than digital photography. Every frame matters, which means photographers are constantly watching for real moments instead of relying on rapid-fire shooting or heavily posed images. Because of this, film photography naturally leans into documentary-style storytelling. Instead of stopping the day for posed photos over and over again, the focus stays on what’s actually happening — laughter, hugs, quiet glances, and the in-between moments that couples often remember the most.

For Carmen and Zach, that meant their wedding day felt relaxed and immersive. They weren’t constantly pulled away from their guests for photos, and the result was a gallery full of genuine memories rather than staged moments.

What Documentary Style Wedding Photography Actually Means

When couples hear the phrase documentary style wedding photography, they sometimes think it means there will be no guidance at all. In reality, it simply means the day is photographed as it naturally unfolds rather than being heavily directed.

Carmen and Zach’s wedding is the perfect example!

Their timeline created space for meaningful moments without making the day feel like a photoshoot. Instead of building the entire schedule around posed portraits, they focused on experiences with the people they love most. This allowed the photography to feel natural and unobtrusive, which is exactly where film photography shines.
